OCTOBER AWARENESS DATES 2023

Looking for some inspiration for next months planning, or would you like to get involved in a cause that holds some significance to your child/ren? Here are some local and international sustainability themed days that might be fun to dip into.


OCTOBER

1 -7 AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE WEEK - to encourage a positive relationship between humanity and nature.


1-31 INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH - gives children, parents, teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. VicHealth has a local initiative.


2/3 WORLD HABITAT DAY - to reflect on the state of our habitats, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.


4 WORLD ANIMAL DAY – unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals.


12 WORLD MIGRATIONARY BIRD DAY - is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. 2023 theme ‘Water’


16 WORLD FOOD DAY – promotes worldwide awareness of hunger and promotes action for the future of food, people and the planet. 2023 theme – ‘Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind’


16-22 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL WATER WEEK - encourages individuals, communities, schools and organisations to be inspired to promote the importance of water 2023 theme ‘United by Water’


16-22 AUSTRALIAN BACKYARD BIRD COUNT – aims to engage individuals in the natural world while getting te know the birds in their local community through a simple fun activity.


17 INTERNATIONAL SAWFISH DAY - aim of raising awareness of these endangered animals and the threats they face.


17 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY - to educate the public on issues of global povery, to mobilize political will and resources ,and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.


18 NATIONAL RIDE2WORK DAY (Australia) - supporting and celebrating the many health, wellbeing and environmental benefits riding provides.


18 WORLD OKAPI DAY - centered around celebrating this special animal and using it as a flagship species to protect the entire forest ecosystem in which it lives.


20/21 INTERNATIONAL SLOTH DAY - helps to raise awareness of sloths, their unique biology, and the conservation challenges they face in the wild.


22 INTERNATIONAL WOMBAT DAY - to celebrate the existence of these amazing animals and to prevent them from going extinct.


23 INTERNATIONAL SNOW LEOPARD DAY – held in order to commemorate the anniversary of the Bishkek Declaration to create awareness of the Snow Leopard


24 INTERNATIONAL FRESH WATER DOLPHIN DAY - aims to raise people's awareness of protecting the freshwater or river dolphins and publicize their significance to the local ecosystem.


24 INTERNATIONAL GIBBON DAY - a commemoration to draw public attention to gibbon protection


24 UNITED NATIONS DAY - marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.


27 WORLD TEACHER DAY - to celebrate teachers for their skilled work in educating, inspiring, ad supporting students
